30 DAY BL DRAMA CHALLENGE DAY 11: FAVOURITE CAST

This one was hard, but in the end there's a difference between roles being written for the lead actors (I Told Sunset About You/I Promised You the Moon), and every actor just embodying already written characters and having perfect chemistry together, so I had to choose Gaya Sa Pelikula.

Gaya was one of the numerous Filipino BLs shot during the pandemic, but the only one to not feature the pandemic as part of its story (other than to say more or less explicitly that it was set pre-pandemic). It however clearly worked the restrictions of shooting during the pandemic into its story to its advantage: in the use of video calls to integrate Karl's parents and Vlad's best friend; in the way Karl and Vlad are a bubble of two, to the point that when Judit drops by or Anna barges in it's almost always a catalytic point; in the way the dinner party in episode 7 is SO jarring because there are just so many people in the room, and they're all looking at Karl, freaking him out.

When you've got a small cast and a claustrophobic story, it can either go very well or very badly, and Gaya nailed it. Ian and Paolo (Paolo especially) are exceptionally well cast, with fantastic chemistry; Yesh is amazing, Adrienne does much to bring pathos to a character that could be incredibly annoying in the wrong hands, and Franco seals the deal at the end. Even the 'offscreen' actors, Chrome and Che (Karl's parents) and Justine (Susan), give exactly the right amount to the story ('FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SHOWBIZ?!' is one of the best line readings from a minor character I can remember in forever). They never physically interact with the rest of the cast but they don't feel like cardboard cutouts, they feel as real as Karl and Vlad do. I can FEEL Karl's anxiety and his father's intensity every time his parents call him. I can feel Vlad and Susan's familiarity and affection for each other.

It's just a great casting job.
